New Line Cinema has released a second trailer for Tammy, a Melissa McCarthy comedy about a woman struggling to crawl out of chaos. Written by husband and wife duo Ben Falcone and McCarthy, the film explores the titular Tammy’s response to three forms of loss; the financial loss of her job, the directional loss of a vehicle, and the romantic loss of a cheating husband. Falcone, a career actor with roles in Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids (2011), Kirk Jones’ What to Expect When You’re Expecting (2012), and Nicole Holofcener’s Enough Said (2013), will be making his feature directorial debut.
This is similarly a substantial advancement for McCarthy, as in addition to starring in the film Tammy marks her debut as writer. With her background in improv at Groundlings and previous comedy experience on television and film, Tammy seems a proper mode to demonstrate her versatility. McCarthy broke out in Feig’s Bridesmaids (2011) before landing a starring role in Seth Gordon’s Identity Thief (2013) and re-teaming with Feig (plus Sandra Bullock) for The Heat (2013). Well known as Sookie, the chef and best friend of Lorelei in Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Gilmore Girls (2000-2007), and Molly in the more recent series in Mark Roberts’ Mike & Molly (2010-2014), McCarthy once again has an opportunity to prove that she is just as capable on the big screen as she is in television.
Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking and Thelma & Louise) plays Tammy’s drinking and cursing grandmother, who in the trailer mistakenly assumes that Tammy is pregnant when she refuses alcohol…while driving. The duo embark on a road-trip, but the trip seems to roll from one amusing conflict to another more than it solves any of Tammy’s problems.
This trailer looks similar to the first in that it highlights the same burger robbery gone amiss. An inelegant McCarthy again disguises herself with a brown paper bag over her head and hand, in attempt to rob the restaurant “Toppy Jacks.” However, this trailer provides a glimpse of Tammy “unrobbing” this same burger joint.
In addition to the outstanding cast previously mentioned, additional cast members include Allison Janney (The West Wing), Gary Cole (Veep), Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine), Nat Faxon (The Way Way Back), Dan Aykroyd (The Blues Brothers), and Kathy Bates (Misery).
Tammy, a story most people will pretend not to relate to, will be coming to a theater near you July 2.
