It seems Relativity Media has finally settled on a director for its film Hunter Killer, an adaptation of the thriller novel ‘Firing Point’ written by George Wallace and Don Keith, as reported by The Wrap. Steven Quale, a longtime James Cameron collaborator, will be helming the project.
A number of directors have been previously attached to the film, such as McG, Antoine Fuqua, and Phillip Noyce. Things can change very fast in Hollywood, but by the look of things, it seems Quale will be the man for the job.
Quale’s most recent feature to bow in theaters was the forgettable, although financially successful, Final Destination 5 (no, you did not misread that, there was indeed a fifth one). His new film, Into The Storm, about a group of high school students who attempt to document the aftermath of a devastating tornado, is generating a lot of buzz, and may have helped him land the Hunter Killer gig. Yeah…that and maybe, oh…he’s also worked as James Cameron’s Second Unit Director since 1997. It’s worth noting, Quale is a VFX guru (like Cameron) and has had a strong hand in each of Cameron’s last works, including True Lies (1994), Titanic (1997), and Avatar (2009), the two latest of which are the top two highest grossing films of all time. No to mention, Quale and Cameron directed a documentary together back in 2005, Aliens Of The Deep. Surely, Quale’s prior work with Cameron is paying off.
Hunter Killer is an action thriller about an untested submarine captain who teams up with the Navy SEALs to rescue a kidnapped Russian president. We’re getting visions of early ’90s Harrison Ford movies, and it’s certainly an opportunity for Quale to further prove he can thrill audiences without the help of Cameron. No word yet on who will star in the picture. Surely, we’ll hear more on this in the coming months.
Quale’s Into The Storm arrives in theaters August 8.
