New ‘Pixels’ Posters Show Retro Inspiration

Five new teaser posters have been released for the upcoming adventure comedy Pixels starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James. The film centers on a group of video game champions – played by Sandler, Peter Dinklage (HBO’s Game of Thrones), Michelle Monaghan (Source Code), and Josh Gad (Jobs) – who are recruited by the President (Kevin James) to defend Earth against classic video game characters.

Each of the five posters center on a character from the classic video games Pac-ManSpace Invaders, Donkey Kong, Galaga and Centipede, moving in to destroy famous landmarks. Along with showing some of the characters the crew will face, they also highlight the animation style of the creatures that will highlight the pixel-art style of the original.

Sony recently announced that they were pushing back the movie from its May 15th, 2015 release date to July 24. This move showed the studio’s confidence in the movie’s earning power during the summer blockbuster season. It’s the second mainstream film to center on video game culture, as 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph also featured many video game characters from the 80s and 90s and found success critically and commercially. Director Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) will likely add touches to help bring families into the theater. The film is co-written by Tim Herlihy, who has worked on the scripts for many Sandler films, including Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, and The Wedding Singer.
