The latest issue of Empire Magazine features exclusive stills from the Josh Trank (Chronicle) reboot of Marvel’s Fantastic Four. Each photo focuses on one member of the superhero team– Kate Mara (127 Hours) as Sue Storm, Miles Teller (Whiplash) as Reed Richards, Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) as Johnny Storm, and Jamie Bell (Jumper) as Ben Grimm, with an additional appearance by cast member Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?).
For the new adaptation of the familiar comic book story, Trank has approached the material in a less cartoonish way than has been represented in the past. According to the director, the general tone of the film will be that of a “dark Amblin movie.” He along with fellow screenwriters Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Jeremy Slater (The Lazarus Effect) chose to approach characterization and setting within a “real world” context. The exhibited stills steer focus away from grand superhero personas and more toward the solitary human.
There’s the opportunity to make something that is challenging and tragic and dramatic,” Trank comments. “The opportunity is right there in the material. We’d rather steer it in that direction as opposed to just embracing a tone that comes right off the page.
