New Image from ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’

Mad Max: Fury Road – much like Total Recall (2012) or Robocop (2014) – is part of a parade of remake/reboots of beloved science fiction action films from the 80’s and 90’s (okay so the first Mad Max film technically came out in 1979, but the series didn’t really get popular in the U.S. and achieve pop culture status  until Mad Max 2 aka The Road Warrior, so it still counts).

This new picture of British actor Tom Hardy as the titular Australian hero (taking over for Mel Gibson) at least hints the new film will retain the look of its predecessors. Hardy’s clothes look like something Max Rockatansky would wear – even if the getup doesn’t include Gibson’s iconic black leather jacket – and the character is perched upon some kind of huge gas-powered machine. Some of the most memorable elements of the series were the insane, decked-out vehicles that looked like they’d been assembled by a belligerent six-year-old after a pop rocks and coke binge. We can only hope Fury Road will also contain rapist holocaust bikers clad in bondage gear.

One reason to anticipate Fury Road‘s authenticity is that unlike most remake/reboots it has the same director behind it who made the original three films – Mad Max, Mad Max 2, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome – native Aussie, George Miller.

Mad Max: Fury Road is set open March 15, 2015.
