New ‘Dragon Ball Super’ Film In Development

Toei Animation has confirmed that a new Dragon Ball Super film is currently in development. It has been over five years since a Dragon Ball revival. The upcoming film will take place after the defeat of Majin Buu, and will take place in the Dragon Ball Super part of the timeline, making it part of the Dragon Ball Z sequel-series which debuted in 2015. This was announced on twitter on Sunday, May 9th, which is also recognized as “Goku Day.” The film is set to be released in 2022.

Written by Akira Toriyama and illustrated by Toyotarou, the Dragon Ball Super manga premiered in June 2015 as a sequel to Toriyama’s original Dragon Ball manga, which ran from 1984 to 1995. The original was so popular that it brought two anime series: 1986’s Dragon Ball and 1989’s Dragon Ball Z. The Dragon Ball Super anime launched one month after the manga, running for 131 episodes from July 2015 to March 2018. An English dub of the anime aired on Toonami in the United States from January 2017 to October 2019.

On May 9th, Toei announced that Dragon Ball series creator and long-time author Akira Toriyama is working closely with the production team on the new movie. Toriyama has worked on everything, “…from the magnificent story composition, to the character design, to the lines of the script”. All of this collaboration has resulted in what Toei calls a “…Dragon Ball movie unlike any other in its history”.

Another huge question among fans is whether or not it will hit American theaters in 2022, or if that release date only applies to the Japanese market. Only time will tell. This news comes from Screenrant.
