New ‘Black Widow’ Trailer Details the Film’s Plot

Even though Black Widow still has few months before it releases, Disney and Marvel Studios are trying to keep the hype alive. A new trailer was released yesterday that gave audiences more detail about the plot of the upcoming film.

Black Widow is an origin story that follows Natasha Romanoff before her time with the Avengers, as she confronts a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past. This final trailer is the first to show a young Natasha and hint at more of the family dynamic between her and the other leads played by Rachel Weiss and David Harbour. The film is the first entry in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will set up Florence Pugh, who stars in the film as Yelena, to take the baton from Scarlett Johansson.

“The storyline that we are telling is very horrifying,” Pugh said in Marvel Studios’ Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book, which released last November. “It’s about women that have been, essentially, abused and trained up to be killing machines.” She added, “As Scarlett said over and over, this is the right time for her to be telling [Black Widow’s] story. And we’re not shying away from the fact that this story is essentially about women getting their life back… And it’s a Marvel Studios film, too. That’s pretty rare, and it’s very exciting to be a part of that.”

Alongside Johansson and Pugh stars David Harbour as Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz as Melina. Cate Shortland is directing the film with a script from Jac Schaeffer, Ned Benson and Eric Pearson.

Pugh also voiced her excitement about the new trailer to her Instagram story. “You seen the new Black Widow trailer?!?!,” she wrote. “I’m so excited. I’m so proud. I’m so grateful for Marvel holding out and giving this film the moment it deserves, I know it was wait… but shit will it be worth it. It’s. Right. Around. The. Corner,” another post read.

Black Widow is set to release in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access July 9, 2021. Unlike Warner Bros.’ hybrid release plan, which allows HBO Max subscribers to watch brand new releases with just a subscription to the service, Disney+’s Premier Access requires a one-time additional fee.
