With the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron now only a few months away and fan anticipation reaching a boiling point, there’s only so much Marvel can do to whet the appetite of the crowd of online bloggers and message board regulars. Which is why Marvel has released the official Age of Ultron poster, and if you hadn’t already noticed, there’s a lot going on here.
The poster shows off our favorite superheroes in something of a conundrum, with a horde of what appear to be Ultron drones swarming around them in a very chaotic situation. And while it does feature the usual suspects – Robert Downey Jr. (The Judge), Chris Evans (Snowpiercer), Chris Hemsworth (Blackhat), Mark Ruffalo (Begin Again), Samuel L. Jackson (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Scarlett Johansson (Lucy), Jeremy Renner (Kill the Messenger) – there’s also some revealing plot information within the poster that might not be apparent to the untrained eye. Both Black Widow and Captain America appear to have slight costume alterations, and we can make out both Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) in the background appearing to fight alongside our heroes, hinting that their union with Ultron (James Spader) that was shown in the trailer may only be temporary.
There’s also a figure in the background, partially obstructed by the light. That figure is Paul Bettany’s (Mortdecai) Vision, and is our first such glimpse of the character (as he didn’t appear in any of the trailers). And if one looks closely, the credits also confirm some appearances that were either expected but not certain, or just outright surprises. Anthony Mackie (Black or White) is listed, hinting that The Falcon will be involved in some fashion, as is Idris Elba (The Gunman), who plays Heimdall. Also included is Stellan Skarsgard (Dr. Eric Selvig) and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter). Finally, for the score enthusiasts out there, Danny Elfman (Spider-Man) is listed as providing “additional music.”
Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released on May 1st.
