Nevermind! Matt Reeves Confirmed to Direct Standalone Batman Film

Multiple reports surfaced in the past week that Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves would be taking over forthcoming standalone Batman title for Warner Bros. Then reports surfaced that talks between the director and the studio had broken down. Well today, it was revealed that Reeves has officially come aboard and will direct and produce The Batman, a further expansion of WB’s effort to expand their DC Comic screen universe.

When first conceived, it looked like The Batman would be directed by Ben Affleck, who made his Caped Crusader screen debut last year in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and will soon be seen in Justice League. Following an odd patch where it details and progress appeared stalled as did Affleck’s commitment to The Batman, the reveal that Reeves has come aboard continues the march forward on the project. However, it is somewhat strange the Affleck’s name is no where to be seen in the WB press release.

In a statement, Reeves commented, “I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”

No release date has yet to be set for The Batman. Variety reports that Oscar winning scribe Chris Terrio (Argo) recently submitted a screenplay for the film that appeared to impress both Warner Bros. and Affleck. This year marks a pivotal year for the DC universe with boht Wonder Woman and Justice League heading to theaters.

Reeves’ next film – War for the Planet of the Apes – hits theaters this summer.
