This year at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony, the independent production company A24 was the Studio to win more awards. However, Netflix came close to the Everything Everywhere All at Once Distributor. The streaming company and Studio picked up significant prizes this year, including Best International Feature Film and their first Best Animated Feature Award. In total, the wins of the studio sum six out of sixteen nominations.
One of their biggest winners was the German feature All Quiet on the Western Front, directed by Edward Berger. The film is an adaptation of a novel of the same name about World War I. The book was adapted before cinema in 1930 and 1979 and presented an anti-war message. All Quiet on the Western Front won the Oscar for Best International Feature, Best Cinematography given to James Friend, Best Original Score for composer Volker Bertelman and Best Production Design to Christian M. Goldbeck and Ernestine Hipper.
As for Best Animated Feature, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio took the award home. The film is a stop-motion adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio that features a new take on the classic tale by being set in the times of Fascism in Italy. Directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, the film competed with Disney-Pixar’s Turning Red, A24’s Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, Another Netflix production called The Sea Beast, and Universal-Dreamworks Puss in Boots.
Another win for the Studio was the Best Documentary Short Film category with The Elephant Whisperers. The short follows an indigenous couple in India that takes care of an orphaned baby Elephant. The Director, Kartiki Gonsalves, documented the couple for five years for the documentary.
In previous years the Studio won 16 Academy Awards. However, it hasn’t been able yet to succeed in the Best Feature category. Nevertheless, it was very close this time, considering they received a Best Feature nomination for All Quiet in the Western Front and two Best Feature awards (international and animation).
