Carmen and Juni Cortez are seeing the big screen once again, and this time on Netflix. The streamer has closed a deal to reboot the early 2000’s action-adventure classic on Wednesday. The franchise is about a family of super-secret agents. Skydance Media has recently gained the rights to the film, intending to reimagine the films for today’s audiences. The new film is yet to be titled, and they have not announced a release date either.
Spyglass Media currently owns the original films and is entirely on board with the reboot. Robert Rodriguez, who created the original series, is returning for the upcoming reboot, which he will write and direct.
Plot details surrounding the film are being kept super-secret as well, but the new generation of Spy Kids will revolve around a multicultural family. The original film followed the lives of Carmen and Juni Cortez (Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara), two kids who are unaware that their parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) work for the Organization of Super Spies. Eventually, the kids join the family business to help and save both their parents and the world.
Casting for the film has yet to be announced. The first film was popular among all audiences and grossed $147 million at global box offices in 2001. The franchise was comprised of three theatrical sequels 2002’s The Island of Lost Dreams, 2003’s Game Over, and 2011’s All the Time in the World. Overall, the franchise has generated more than $550 million worldwide.
