On August 28th, Netflix released a new teaser for Rustin, a film that follows activist Bayard Rustin through the 1963 March on Washington. The trailer was released 60 years – to the day – of this event.
Directed by George C. Wolfe, the film’s synopsis states, “Rustin shines a long overdue spotlight on the extraordinary man who, alongside giants like the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Ella Baker, dared to imagine a different world, and inspired a movement in a march toward freedom.”
The film’s cast includes Colman Domingo as Bayard Rustin, along with Chris Rock as Roy Wilkins, Glynn Turman as A. Philip Randolph, Jeffery Wright as Adam Clayton Powell, and Audra McDonald as Ella Baker. Deadline also notes that the film’s executive producers include Barack and Michelle Obama.
In the trailer, Rustin states, “On the day that I was born Black, I was also born homosexual.” The film is produced by Bruce Cohen, Tonia Davis, and George C. Wolfe. Rustin will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13th. Starting on November 17th, the film will be available for streaming on Netflix, along with release in select theaters.
