It has just been announced that Netflix will be making a movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion. According to the Collider the project will be directed by Carrie Cracknell, who is well established British theater director. Actress Dakota Johnson signed on to the project, and she will be playing Anne Elliot, the protagonist of Persuasion. Johnson is probably best known for her role in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie series.
The movie’s script will be written by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow. The movie is being produced by Andrew Lazar and Christina Weiss Lurie. lizabeth Cantillon, Michael Constable, and David Fliegel will be serving as the movie’s executive producers.
Persuasion was the last completed novel written by Austen. The plot follows the Anne Elliot and her family. When Anne was 19 she broke off her engagement to Navy Captain Frederick Wentworth. Then seven years later the Elliot family rent out their house to Frederick’s sister and her husband. Anne and Fredrick find themselves crossing paths once again.
According to Netflix this movie will take a modern and witty approach to the novel. It is unknown what this means. Perhaps the movie will be updating the story’s setting or change anything about the story to make it more appealing to modern viewers.
