Netflix wants filmgoers to stay home. So far in 2017, Netflix has released several original films such as I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, Okja, and Death Note, with an adaptation of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game and Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father both being released before the end of the year.
Mudbound, like Beasts of No Nation and Okja, continues Netflix’s trend of distributing prestige projects for the streaming service. Directed by Dee Rees (Bessie) and starring Jason Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund, Carey Mulligan, Mary J. Blige, Jonathan Banks, and Jason Clarke, Mudbound follows World War II veterans, Ronsel Jackson (Mitchell) and Jamie McAllen (Hedlund), as they struggle to adapt to home life in rural Mississippi amidst Jim Crow-era racial tension.
The film generated buzz at Sundance, prompting Netflix to purchase distribution rights for a whopping $12.5 million. The acclaimed film is already a potential Oscar fixture, which might mean that Rees will make history as the first black woman to receive a Best Director nomination.
Mudbound will debut on Netflix and in select theaters on November 17.
