Netflix Earns Rights to ‘Code 8: Part II’

Netflix Co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos announced today that Netflix earned the rights to the upcoming Canadian Sci-fi movie Code 8: Part II. The film is directed by Jeff Chan and was written by Chris Paré, Jeff Chan, Sherren Lee and Jesse LaVercombe.

This will be Netflix’s first original Canadian English-language feature acquisition, according to Deadline.

The sequel will star Robbie Amell (Upload) and Stephen Amell (Arrow), who are reprising their roles from the first film.

The story of a teenage girl with abnormal abilities witnesses the murder of her brother and the subsequent cover up of the crime. She seeks the help of an ex-con (Robbie Amell) and his former partner-in-crime (Stephen Amell).

Producers are Chan, Robbie Amell, Stephen Amell and Paré. The film will begin shooting in Canada and will release on Netflix later this year.

The original Code 8 raised $2.5 million from more than 35K backers through Indiegogo, making the film the second-largest crowdfunded original movie of all time. Code 8 set the record for the highest-grossing day-and-date release for Elevation Pictures in Canada and for Vertical Entertainment in the U.S.
