Netflix has just acquired the worldwide rights to Idris Elba’s new drama, Concrete Cowboy. Elba stars in the film alongside Stranger Things’ Caleb McLaughlin.
Concrete Cowboy centers around a teenager who discovers the world of urban horseback riding when he moves in with his estranged father in North Philadelphia. The father-son drama premiered at Toronto International Film Festival last month.
The film was called a “moving, well-acted drama about a fractured family coming together in unexpected ways,” by The Hollywood Reporter, who first reported the news of this acquisition. It’s currently sitting at 76% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with 42 reviews.
Concrete Cowboy is the feature-length directorial debut of Ricky Staub and an adaptation of the novel Ghetto Cowboy by G. Neri. Staub previously worked as an assistant for producer Sam Mercer on films like The Last Airbender, Devil, and Snow White and the Huntsman. Staub wrote the new film with Dan Walser, who he previously worked with on his 2017 short film, The Cage.
Elba’s last time on the big screen was in the infamous 2019 musical adaption Cats. The actor is also set to star as Bloodsport in James Gunn’s upcoming reboot/remake/sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 DC film Suicide Squad.
Netflix is planning to release the film sometime in 2021.
