Netflix Acquires Sci-Fi Romance ‘The Discovery’

Netflix continues its string of rapid feature film acquisitions, and the latest is Charlie McDowell’s The Discovery, starring Oscar-winning director and twice-Oscar nominated actor Robert Redford (Truth), twice-Oscar nominated Rooney Mara (Carol), and Jason Segel (The End of the Tour).

The film is a sci-fi romantic drama, telling the tale of a scientist (Redford) who proves the existence of an afterlife. Romance blossoms between the scientist’s son Will (Segel) and Isla (Mara), a woman “haunted by a tragic past.” Justin Lader (The One I Love) penned the screenplay.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said, “To describe the story as original doesn’t begin to capture the world that Charlie has created that will envelop you. Our global viewers are going to love this film.”

Among Netflix’s upcoming releases are Rob Burnett’s drama The Fundamentals of Caring on June 24, Tallulah starring Allison Janney (Finding Dory) and Ellen Page (Freeheld) on July 29, and the animated feature The Little Prince on August 5th.
