According to The Hollywood Reporter, Damien Chazelle, the director of Whiplash, is considering First Man as future studio project. The film takes its title from the book First Man: A Life of Neil A. Armstrong by James Hanson. Josh Singer of The Fifth Estate about Julian Assange is being considered as the script writer.
A movie about the first man to walk on the moon has seemed all but inevitable especially after Neil Armstrong’s death in 2012 at the age of 82. After working as a Navy test pilot, Armstrong was assigned to the crew of Apollo 11 and first set foot on the moon on July 21, 1969. James Hanson had access to resources both from the Armstrong household and NASA for his book. At one point Clint Eastwood had been set to direct and produce an adaptation for Warner Bros,though the project has since come to Universal. Martey Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, coming off the success of Maze Runner, will produce.
As a short film, Chazelle’s debut film, Whiplash, got him noticed at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013, and again this year as a full-length feature; it is set for a limited release on October 10th. His next film will likely be La La Land, a musical starring Emma Watson and Miles Teller.
