‘Mr. Robot’ Creator-Star Duo, Sam Esmael and Rami Malek Set For Adaptation of FBI Terrorist-Fighter’s Memoir

You can’t stop Rami Malek now. The 37-year-old actor recently graced the headlines after 20th Century Fox released the trailer for the upcoming Queen-bio pic, Bohemian Rhapsody, in which Malek will be playing the legendary vocalist, Freddie Mercury. This is quite character change for the actor after gaining popularity and universal acclaim for his breakthrough role in Sam Esmail’s Mr. Robot, produced by USA Network, for which Malek won an Emmy Award.

In Mr. Robot, Malek plays a reclusive hacker, Elliot Alderson, who could have not been more opposite compared to Queen’s frontman, highlighting Malek’s wide range of acting ability. Indeed, while Mr. Robot is what got the actor nominated and recognized, Malek had already graced small and big screens starring in highly acclaimed pieces like The Pacific, produced by HBO, and The Master, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The talent of the young actor was clearly recognized prior to Esmail’s hit series, but truly it is the powerful performance which Malek put out in Mr. Robot that boosted him to the list of Hollywood’s A-list echelon.

Now, the creator and the star are reuniting for a feature film based on a book by a formal, undercover, Muslim FBI agent. Universal (sister cable network with USA) has optioned the rights for American Radical written by Tamer Elnoury and Kevin Maurer, following Elnoury’s memoir in which he describes secret operations of taking down terrorist cells in North America. Esmail is set to direct the Anonymous Content production that is currently in search for a writer to adapt the book.

Malek is set to star and Chad Hamilton will be producing along with Malek and Esmail themselves. The content seems to be closer to the themes of Mr. Robot and the film will most likely embrace similar political and social messages of modern, computerized espionage.

Sam Esmail, much like his star, has been keeping busy. After becoming one of the industry’s most successful show-runners with Mr. Robot, Esmail is now executive-producing and directing Homecoming for Amazon, a half-hour show starring Julia Roberts, after which the 40-year-old creator will return to Mr. Robot for the 4th season.

Learning the craft myself, I continue to do so now as I start to dive into bigger projects, with the goal of writing and directing for film and TV! While early on I was mostly exposed to New Hollywood directors and 90s filmmakers like David Fincher, the Coen Brothers and Spike Jonze, I eventually began venturing to foreign cinema of the likes of Fellini, Bergman, Kurosawa, as well as Old Hollywood masters like Hitchcock, David Lean, and Billy Wilder. In films I primarily seek two things: passion and innovation. I love observing confident filmmakers masterfully submerge the audience into unique worlds and stories, utilizing all of cinema’s many possibilities like visuals, sound, music, and editing. Film has developed a universal language that is becoming more and more available to wider varieties of artists, which makes me excited to observe and engage in the future of both Hollywood and the world cinema!
