HBO Max has officially released its most-watched movies of the year 2021, and there are a few stunners on that list. Surprisingly, neither Matrix Resurrections nor Dune takes the number one spot.
In December 2020, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 1984 was the first step into Warner Bros’ new strategy to release their movies simultaneously in movie theaters and on their streaming platform HBO Max as a direct result of the covid pandemic. A little over a year later, more than 16 movies have been released following the same strategy—some with a great outcome and others with mixed results. According to Businessinsider, the long-anticipated sci-fi movies Dune and Matrix Resurrections did not even make the top three spots on the streaming service. Unexpectedly, the most-watched movie on HBO Max in 2021 was no other than the movie based on one of the most brutal combat-based video games franchises ever, Mortal Kombat. The Suicide Squad by director James Gunn did well both in the box office and on the streaming service as it came in third place. Here is a shortlist of the 16 most-streamed movies during their release weekend on HBO Max.
