The Los Angeles Film Critics Association announced Sunday their picks for the best movies of the year. Presented annually, LAFCA is one of major critics groups of the season and this year it was Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight that feted with the Best Picture prize. The critically admired coming of age story – which focuses on a sexually conflicted African-American growing up in Miami – also earned Jenkins the Best Director prize as well as a Supporting Actor honor for Mahershala Ali.
For those keeping score, of the prizes already announced, Moonlight has won two Best Film awards (from the Gotham Awards and LAFCA), while Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea took Best Film honors from the National Board of Review and Damien Chazelle’s La La Land was feted by the New York Film Critics Circle. Both Manchester and La La Land had admires among the LAFCA crowd as well, but both films were mostly acknowledged with runner-up mentions.
