Insiders at Deadline have reported that Lovecraft Country executive producer and writer Misha Green has been tapped by MGM to write and direct the latest installment of Tomb Raider. This movie will be sequel to the 2018 version and will follow up with Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.
While Green has had a successful writing career, this will be a huge leap in her career. Green has directed one episode of her HBO series, but nothing else. However, she is currently in development two films. A Netflix film entitled The Mother and a remake of the 1973 blaxploitation film Cleopatra Jones. She has written the screenplay for both, no word if she will direct those.
Aside from that Green’s early work consists of creating Underground, writing on Spartacus, Heroes, and Sons of Anarchy. Her most abundant creativity coming from linking with producers Jordan Peele for Lovecraft Country, which has received critical and audience success as of now.
There are currently no plot or production details for the Tomb Raider sequel, but based on Green’s vision and writing in the past, it should be something completely different than the first studio action flick. The 2018 film received mixed reviews overall, though Vikander was well-liked in the iconic video game role.
This is a huge leap in Misha Green’s career and let’s hope, similar to Lara Croft, she can stick the landing.
Lovecraft Country stars Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors, and Michael K. Williams among others. The series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
