Milo Manheim To Headline Michael Showalter’s ‘Serendipity’ Reimagining For Amazon MGM Studios And Miramax

Milo Manheim in 'School Spirits' Official Trailer

Milo Manheim (School Spirits, Thanksgiving) has been cast in a leading role in a contemporary reimagining of the 2001 romantic comedy Serendipity for Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax, with Michael Showalter (The Idea of You, The Big Sick) attached to direct.

The project, which was first announced in August, is being conceived not as a traditional beat-for-beat remake or reboot, but rather as a contemporary “rebuttal” to the original premise. While character details for Manheim remain undisclosed, the updated film will follow an entirely new set of characters navigating modern dating dynamics, chance encounters, and shifting perspectives on fate and relationships.

Marc Klein, who penned the original 2001 feature directed by Peter Chelsom and starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, has returned to write the new screenplay. Showalter and Jordana Mollick will produce via their Semi-Formal Productions banner—which operates under an active first-look film pact with Amazon MGM—alongside original producer Simon Fields. Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, and Thom Zadra serve as executive producers for Miramax alongside Klein. Emily Crook is overseeing the production for Semi-Formal, with Arianna D’Andrea overseeing for Miramax.

The original Miramax release grossed over $77 million worldwide and recently marked its 25th anniversary with a celebratory screening at Central Park’s Wollman Rink. Whether the new iteration is aimed for an exclusive theatrical release or a Prime Video streaming rollout has not yet been determined.

The casting adds another major studio vehicle to Manheim’s expanding docket following his breakout in Disney Channel’s Zombies franchise. He recently wrapped a lead turn opposite Teagan Croft as Flynn Rider in Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action Tangled, which is slated for theatrical release on March 31, 2028.
