Michelle Williams in Talks for Jonah Hill’s Directorial Debut ‘Mid-90s’

Michelle Williams is the first cast member to be circling Mid 90s, film written by Jonah Hill that will also serve as the Oscar-nominated actor’s directorial debut, according to Deadline. Scott Rudin Productions is producing the film, which will be released by A24. Hill and company are looking to start filming in June.

Hill wrote the screenplay about a young boy growing up in mid-1990s Los Angeles, trying to fit in with the skateboarding crowd. It follows Stevie, who is forced to play many roles in his own life – one as a surrogate partner to his dependent single mother, another as a punching-bag to his troubled older brother, and a third as an invisible third-wheeler in his wealthier group of school-friends. Aligning himself with the skate crowd brings Stevie into contact with issues of race, class, and privilege that he’s never experienced before.

Although this will be Hill’s first time in the director’s chair, it is his fifth produced script after 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, Sausage Party, and Why Him?

Williams is in talks to play Stevie’s unhinged mother, who becomes unstable as he grows further apart from her. Williams, a four-time Oscar nominee, was recently bestowed the honor for her supporting role in Manchester by the Sea. Up ahead, she is playing Janis Joplin in the bio Janis, will be starring in Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck with Julianne Moore, and will appear in The Greatest Showman alongside Hugh Jackman.
