Spotlight, the adaptation of the true story of the sexual abuse cover-up at the Boston Archdiocese, has landed a prime release date for the upcoming awards season: November 6. The film, starring Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo, centers on the Boston Globe team who broke the story about the 2002 crime.
Alongside Keaton and Ruffalo, the movie also stars Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, Brian D’arcy James, and Stanley Tucci. Spotlight is directed by Oscar nominee Tom McCarthy and will be released in November by Open Road. The movie will follow the progression of the investigation and release of the details of the 2002 crimes and ensuing cover-ups. The crimes were a part of a series of sexual abuse investigations across the United States and Ireland in the early 2000s that affected the entire Catholic church worldwide.
November is prime time for awards season picks, as last year’s The Theory of Everything and Keaton’s own Birdman showed. Keaton will also be seen in the upcoming films Minions and Kong: Skull Island. Mark Ruffalo is currently filming Now You See Me: The Second Act.
Spotlight will first be released on November 6 in select theaters before moving to a nationwide release on November 20. It will be released alongside several highly anticipated movies, including Brooklyn, Trumbo, Spectre (the new entry in the James Bond series), The Peanuts Movie, and The Outskirts.
