Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts‘ star is high on the rise after starring in Far From the Madding Crowd and alongside Oscar-winners Alicia Vikander and Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl last year. According to Deadline, he has just been cast to reunite with his Madding Crowd director Thomas Vinterberg as the star of his next film Kursk.
Kursk will look to tell the true story of a nuclear-powered Russian submarine that sank during a training exercise in 2000. Twenty-three members of the crew survived, but only after spending countless desperate minutes preserving what little oxygen they had left while waiting for rescue.
Writer of Saving Private Ryan, Robert Rodat, adapted the screenplay from Robert Moore’ book A Time to Die. Luc Besson‘s EuropaCorp is financing the survival tale.
Schoenaerts first came on the American scene back in 2011 with Bullhead, which was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, and soon followed that up with 2012’s Rust and Bone, a French film that starred Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) and earned her second Academy Award nomination. Since then, he has booked consistently solid roles in A Little Chaos, The Loft, and last year’s two aforementioned dramas. This year, he will be making waves opposite Tilda Swinton (Moonrise Kingdom), Ralph Fiennes (Grand Budapest Hotel), and Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) in A Bigger Splash, and will reunite with Johnson as bandmates in The Sound of Metal.
