A24 has quickly gained momentum over the last few years with their output of unique, fascinating indie films. Whether it’s something like the wild Spring Breakers or the highly-acclaimed thriller Ex Machina, this studio is one of the most diverse studios in Hollywood. And even though they have hefty amount of releases slated for 2016 already, there’s always enough space for one more. According to THR, The Sea of Trees, directed by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting), has finally found a loving home with the studio.
Just a few days before the film’s premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, it was picked up by Roadshow Attractions/Lionsgate. The spiritual drama, starring Matthew McConaughey, tells the story of damaged man who travels to Japan’s “Suicide Forest” after the death of his wife. He intends to take his life there but comes upon a lost Japanese man (Ken Watanabe). The two become companions as they try and salvage their tragic situations. While this film sounded promising, it had very poor reception at the festival. But those who follow A24 know they are always one for second chances.
It’s righteous of the small studio to give The Sea of Trees another look. But since it hasn’t been seen by mass audiences yet, there’s no telling if this rescue will actually pay off. Nevertheless, McConaughey and Watanabe should make for an interesting on-screen pair. The film does not have an official release date yet, but it will more than likely hit sometime later this year.
