Actor and Texas native Matthew McConaughey has announced his intentions to possibly run for office in his home state, according to an interview on NBC’s Today. McConaughey was born, raised, and attended college in the Lone Star state, and even took up a faculty position at the University of Texas in 2019.
He told Al Roker in the interview, “Look, it’s a very honorable consideration. So am I considering that? Sure, it’s a great thing and an honorable thing to be able to consider.”
He expressed his desire to take up a leadership position in this next stage of his life, in politics or not, as he is in search of a “position of most use in a leadership role” and is open to being a “free agent.”
If McConaughey does decide to run in the next election, he will be facing current Texas governor Greg Abbott, who is currently under fire for the recent full reopening of the state amidst the ongoing pandemic, and the widespread power grid failure that left many without power in freezing temperatures.
McConaughey is currently involved in relief efforts for those impacted by that storm, and is working towards helping those with home and pipe damage preventing them from accessing running water. To gather the funds to do so throughout the state, he is hosting a star-studded fundraiser on his Youtube channel called “We’re Texas” (see below). If his efforts are successful, he certainly will be gaining a supportive following in the coming months from his home state.
