Marvel Studios has posted their first official clip online for their upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The clip, titled “Sunday Dinner,” features the four members of the team, Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch) and Ben Grimm (The Thing) sitting down for their weekly Sunday dinner. In the clip, Reed, played by Pedro Pascal, and Sue (Vanessa Kirby) arrive a minute late to the table, something that is quite uncommon for them. After flustering with their words for a bit, Johnny (Joseph Quinn) notes that they are both acting weird, and finally Ben (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) breaks the ice by asking Sue, “Are you pregnant?” Sue admits, and the four of them celebrate, with Johnny pronouncing him and Ben as “the best uncles ever.”
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the third and final MCU film to be released this year, following Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*. The film will be the first time the Fantastic Four will be present in the MCU, with their film rights previously being owned by 20th Century Fox. After Disney bought out 20th Century Fox back in 2019, the company acquired the rights to use characters such as the Fantastic Four and the X-Men in their Marvel films. Last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine brought in some of the mutant superheroes to the MCU, and now The Fantastic Four: First Steps aims to do the same with Marvel’s first family.
The film takes place in a retro-futurist society, with the film seemingly taking heavy inspiration from early Fantastic Four comics from the 1960s. It will follow the team as they navigate their world as being celebrities and heroes, but when the Silver Surfer heralds the coming of the world-eater Galactus, the team must band together to prevent the destruction of their world. It is unclear exactly where this takes place in the grander MCU, but it is presumably not the same universe as the other films. However, the next scheduled MCU film is Avengers: Doomsday, and all four members of the Fantastic Four are confirmed to appear. The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters July 25.
