Marvel Releases ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Teaser

On Wednesday, Marvel released a teaser trailer for its newest superhero film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The movie will be a sequel to the 2016 film Doctor Strange and is set to star Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange, an acclaimed neurosurgeon whose life changed after a car accident once again. Within the first movie, he is introduced to the magic and a powerful group of sorcerers that show him true power and a new meaning of life.

The teaser footage first appeared as one of the end credits to Spider-Man: No Way Home and foreshadows the consequences Strange will face because of his actions, including a darker version of himself.

In No Way Home, Benedict Wong’s Sorcerer Supreme warns Strange, “Don’t cast that spell. It’s too dangerous,” and while Strange ignores him, he stands corrected as his spell opens up the multiverse and releases villains from other universes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Your desecration of reality will not go unpunished,” an ominous voice tells Dr. Strange as a torn-up city floats around him. “It was the only way,” Cumberbatch responds. To save reality, Strange sets out to find Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, who believes he’s there to condemn her actions that took place in the Marvel TV show, WandaVision.

“I need your help,” he tells her. “What do you know about the multiverse?”

As the teaser continues, we are given a glimpse into the true nature of Doctor Strange, that he is dangerous- at least this version of him. We are then introduced to the perceived villain of the film, a darker version of Doctor Strange himself.

“I hope you understand that the greatest threat to our universe is you,” Cumberbatch is told, as a darker version of him says, “things just got out of hand.”

After wrapping production in the spring of 2021, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness announced that it would undergo reshoots in November; over six weeks, the cast and crew are working six days a week in Los Angeles to finish the film.

“Like everything with Marvel, it comes in fresh, pretty much, most mornings,” Cumberbatch said at the time of the announcement. “It’s really exciting, and the film is shaping up to be something special.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
