Marvel Announces Natalie Portman as Female Thor in Upcoming ‘Thor’ Film

Marvel Studios has announced that in the upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder, Natalie Portman will play the female Thor. Accompanying Portman in the film are Chris Hemsworth as Thor (the original) and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie.

Taika Waititi, fan favorite director who directed Thor: Ragnarok, will direct the film.

This unexpected twist of Portman taking over the hammer corresponds to a plotline in The Mighty Thor comic series and has been long theorized about by fans wondering if we might see it on the big screen. In those comics, Thor himself loses the ability to wield Mjolnir and so Jane must take over to keep up the fight for peace. In this storyline as well, Jane was battling breast cancer and would lose the progress she had made in chemo every time she wielded Thor’s powers. However, there’s no confirmation yet what Thor: Love and Thunder will cover from the comics as of yet; we’ll just have to wait and see.

The film is set to be released on November 5, 2021.
