While Marvel’s Phase 4 films remain distant future projects, the public has since received an update on the details for Thor: Love and Thunder and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The New South Wales state government announced Friday that filming for these projects will take place in Sydney, Australia, according to Variety. Sydney is a short distance from Gold Coast, Queensland, the site of Thor: Ragnarok’s was filmed. Filming for Love and Thunder is set to begin in August 2020 and will premiere November 5, 2021. Shang-Chi will debut on February 12, 2021.
These projects will financially benefit both the country and the studio. Governments at the country’s state and federal levels will be providing more than $16.7 million in subsidies, with this support allowing the opportunity for funding larger budget projects. In turn, it’s estimated that Marvel will contribute $124 million to the economy, creating around 2,500 jobs, and using the services of 1,650 businesses over the course of production. Vice President of Marvel Studios, David Grant, stated that the company will involve local university students in the films through internship opportunities.
Shang-Chi is expected to feature Awkwafina, Simu Liu, and Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, amongst other yet to be named actors. At San Diego’s 2019 Comic-Con, Natalie Portman was announced as the next Lady Thor for Love and Thunder.
