Martin Scorsese’s New Netflix Film ‘The Irishman’ Gets First Trailer

With Oscar Season around the corner, Netflix is joining the Oscar race again despite the ongoing debate as to whether their films qualify for an Academy Award. This time, iconic director Martin Scorsese will be creating a film for the streaming service titled The Irishman.

The Irishman stars Robert De Niro as famous hitman and union leader, named Frank Sheeran, otherwise known as the Irishman. The film is loosely based on a book written by author Charles Brand called I Heard You Paint Houses ,which chronicles the life and career of Sheeran and his connection to the Bufalino family. Starring alongside De Niro are legendary actors Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, respectively playing Sheeran’s friend and activist Jimmy Hoffa and Mafia boss Russell Bufalino.

One of the key elements that stands out about Scorsese’s new film are the digital effects used to make De Niro, Pacino and Pesci look younger across the various moments of Sheeran’s life. The effects are done by Lucasfilm’s Industrial Lights and Magic, signifying another huge step in the company’s ability to perfect CGI humans after recreating Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Regardless of the de-aging effects, many are excited for this new Scorsese film, as its another crime thriller made with longtime collaborator Robert De Niro in their 9th collaboration together. Not to mention the film has been in development hell for nearly 12 years, originally being announced as a Paramount film back in 2008, so this was a longtime coming for De Niro and Scorsese. No official release date has been set for the film, but it’s expected to release on Netflix and in select theaters by the end of 2019. The film will also premiere on the opening night of 2019’s New York Film Festival.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
