Mark Ruffalo has earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the biographical drama Spotlight, which has already won multiple awards this year including a BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay (Written by Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer) as well as the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
Ruffalo portrays a real-life journalist (Mike Rezendes) who was part of the investigative team that uncovered a massive child molestation scandal within several Catholic Churches throughout the city of Boston. He has received two previous Best Supporting Actor nominations for his performance in the films Foxcatcher (2014) and The Kids Are All Right (2010).
Ruffalo has built an impressive career playing a wide range of supporting roles in many feature films. He began acting in minor roles during the 1990’s and received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Lead in You Can Count On Me (2000).
Ruffalo was forced to put his acting career on hold after being diagnosed with a brain tumor that left him with partial facial paralysis for a short period of time. Thankfully, he was able to make a full recovery and returned to acting in critically acclaimed films such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Zodiac, and Shutter Island.
There is a good chance that Mark Ruffalo could take home an Oscar this year, but he doesn’t seem to mind letting his fellow actors have the “Spotlight”. Even though he has yet to take home any major awards for his multiple supporting roles, Ruffalo has been recognized for several ensemble awards for the aforementioned titles as well as for The Normal Heart and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Ruffalo currently has two highly anticipated films in production: Now You See Me 2 and Thor: Ragnarok.
