Director Andrew Dominik is by no means a prolific filmmaker. He was last seen in 2012 with the very divisive Killing Them Softly. Prior to that, he released The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford in 2007. So, while a very talented director, Dominik definitely takes his time in picking his next project. And there has been one story that he has been circling for years now. Blonde, based off the historical-fiction novel of the same name, tells the fascinating story of Marilyn Monroe. The Some Like it Hot actress led an extraordinary yet tragic life, and has been in dire need of a proper cinematic depiction.
Dominik has announced the project years back, but was never able to find a home for the film. First, Naomi Watts was attached to star in the lead role, although she was eventually forced to drop out. Then, Jessica Chastain came aboard, but she had the same fate. These reports made it seem like Blonde would never come to fruition, despite Dominik’s passion for it. However, according to report from The Film Stage, Blonde will be financed by Netflix. Not only that, Dominik will helm the project, although no casting has been released yet.
Blonde will reportedly have a limited theatrical release along with being shown on the streaming service. So, with this exciting new announcement, it’s only a matter of time before the chosen actress is unveiled. No matter what, it will take a lot to bring Monroe’s unending beauty, elegance and wisdom to the big screen. But with Dominik officially taking the director’s chair, this biopic is in very good hands.
