Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel didn’t start the DC Cinematic Universe off as strongly as many were hoping it would. The film received mixed reviews and brought in average figures at the box office, so it was generally seen as lesser success. And while there initially were talks of a sequel happening pretty quickly after its release, the film’s mild performance put those plans on hold. Instead, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was put in its place, which was the hopeful installment that would launch the DCU into the stratosphere. And again, Warner Bros. came up short after the sort-of-sequel brought in weak numbers on all fronts.
However, the studio definitely hasn’t forgotten that superman origin story, and neither has its fans. According to The Wrap, Man of Steel 2 is now in “active development” and “top priority” for the studio. DC does have their release schedule planned out until 2020, with Man of Steel 2 now joining it as one of the unconfirmed members. Ben Affleck’s Batman solo movie and the Harley Quinn-led spinoff are also awaiting official release dates, so the studio has not finalized all their potential films just yet.
With the report of Man of Steel 2 being in the works, the mystery of who will direct it is now even more intriguing. Last year, there were rumors of director George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) being eyed to possibly take on the sequel, but those never came to fruition. Warner Bros. has already brought on many interesting filmmakers to take on the big comic book projects, so it really could be anyone at this point.
