Sophie Barthes’ adaptation of the classic novel Madame Bovary has release date. Alchemy will release the movie, which premiered last August at the Telluride Film Festival and also screened at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival and London Film Festival last fall, on June 12.
Gustave Flaubert’s famous novel has been brought to the screen a number of times – including a recently released modern version, Gemma Bovery – particularly as people have become more accepting of seeing some of the novel’s sex scenes on movie screens. The story follows Emma Bovary (Mia Wasikowska), who marries a small town doctor (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), only to be disappointed by married life. She eventually engages in a number of extramarital affairs.
This is the second time Wasikowska has played the titular female lead in an classic novel adaptation, as she also starred in Cary Fukunaga’s 2011 adaptation of Jane Eyre. She can be seen next year in Guillermo del Toro’s new horror movie Crimson Peak and the Disney sequel Alice Through The Looking Glass.
