According to Variety, child actress Mackenzie Foy (Interstellar) has been tapped to star in Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a new live-action retelling of the classic Nutcracker story made famous by Tchaikovsky’s Russian ballet. Swedish-born director Lasse Hallström (The Hundred-Foot Journey) is on board to helm.
The original story – entitled The Nutcracker and the Mouse King – was written in 1816 by E.T.A. Hoffmann and later given a lighter adaptation by Alexander Dumas in 1844. Ashleigh Powell in her screenplay writing debut is adapting the Christmas story which follows a girl (Foy) playing with her favorite Nutcracker wooden toy doll when under cover of darkness it comes to life and defeats a seven-headed evil Mouse King. American Ballet Theater ballerina Misty Copeland, the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in ABT, will make her feature film debut as the lead ballerina in the film’s sole dance number.
Mark Gordon will produce with Lindy Goldstein is executive producing. Sam Dickerman and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing the project for Disney. Sara Smith is overseeing for The Mark Gordon Company.
Foy had a break-out role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar as Matthew McConaughey’s young daughter. Her previous credits include The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn parts 1 and 2. She voices The Little Girl in the animated film The Little Prince due out next week on August 5th.
