Variety has reported that the next theatrical outing for the Lord of the Rings franchise will come with The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim from Warner Bros. Animation and New Line and is set to release on April 12, 2024.
The film will explore the origin of the fortress of Helm’s Deep – the location of the pivotal battle in Peter Jackson’s 2002 film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Rohirrim will take place hundreds of years before this battle and will “dive into the blood-soaked era of the mighty king of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand.” Kenji Kamiyama, most known for his work on Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, will helm the film. The script was written by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, based on a story from Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who worked on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance for Netflix.
Production has been underway for the past year with animation at Sola Entertainment. According to Warner Bros, the voice cast for the film is yet to be announced but is on the way.
The Lord of the Rings franchise is first being revived through Amazon Prime’s series Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which is set to release this fall. The newest teaser trailer for the series debuted during the Super Bowl on Sunday.
