The odds will be in Lionsgate’s favor. The first trailer for the next chapter in the Hunger Games series, Sunrise on The Reaping, has been released. Sunrise On The Reaping follows the story of the last District 12 winner of the Hunger Games long before Katniss and Peeta. Marking the 50th annual Hunger Games, a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy has to face down 47 other contestants in the second Quarter Quell, hoping to bring home another victory for District 12.
The film boasts something of an all-star cast. Joseph Zada gets top billing as Haymitch, alongside costars Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Maya Hawke, Ralph Fiennes, and Elle Fanning, among many others.
Hunger Games regular Francis Lawrence returns to direct Sunrise On The Reaping. Lawrence has been directing each Hunger Games film since 2013’s Catching Fire, including the 2023 prequel Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes. Lawrence also had a sizable hit on his hands earlier when he directed The Long Walk, an adaptation of a Stephen King story.
Hollywood Reporter noted that the trailer wasted no time showcasing Haymitch’s skill. Only a fraction of the trailer shows the games themselves, but in that time viewers can get a grasp on the kind of way Haymitch plays the game. With a very direct fighting style, he’s also able to navigate the nature of the arena, which has proven in the past to be just as deadly as the other contestants.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping hits theaters November 20th, 2026. Check out the trailer below.
