Lionsgate Is Turning ‘The Odyssey’ into Multiple Films

Back in April, Lionsgate announced it would be adapting Homer’s epic The Odyssey with the the help of Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 producer Nina Jacobson and director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend). Now the company has announced that they will turn the project into multiple films similar to the Hunger Games franchise.

Homer’s The Odyssey is a sequel to The Iliad and follows Odysseus on his way home after the fall of Troy to his wife Penelope and son Telemachus. Homer is widely thought to have been killed on his journey, but still believing him to be alive, Penelope and Telemachus have to fight off suitors while they wait for Odysseus to make it home.

Lawrence has plenty of experience after taking over the franchise from Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which makes him a smart fit for the project, especially when paired with Jacobson.

Lionsgate has relied heavily on franchises that have brought them much success, including The Hunger GamesDivergentand TwilightThey are also bringing at least two sequels to the surprise 2013 hit Now You See Me.
