Another Memorial Day weekend has cropped up, calling for cookouts and celebrations as the summer kicks off. The box office, however, belongs to Stitch and Ethan Hunt this weekend, as the combined efforts of Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning pave the way for the very best Memorial Day weekend the industry has ever seen.
Before breaking down the distribution of profit, Deadline reports that the overall four-day-weekend is looking to come in at $322 million. The last record holder for Memorial Day weekend was 2013, with $314.3 million. While a staggering total, it comes in just shy of the one-two punch that was Wicked and Moana 2 back on Thanksgiving of last year. Those two films made for a four-day total of $333 million, while its five-day frame was $423 million, per BoxOfficeMojo.
Lilo & Stitch leads the weekend, still managing to outdo the expectations once again. The film is looking to place somewhere between $175 to $180 million by the close of Monday. This is already far better than the last live action endeavor from Disney, Snow White, which struggled to make over that much in its entire run.
Mission: Impossible eases itself into second place, looking to take home a four-day $77 million gross. This is already shaping up to be one of the best openings the Mission Impossible series has seen since its 1996 debut. $77 million is also far better than its predecessor, Dead Reckoning, which debuted to $54 million.
Final Destination: Bloodlines rounds out the top 3 at $24 million for the weekend. Thunderbolts* is up next in fourth with $11.5 million, while Sinners isn’t far behind at $11 million.
