GLAAD, or the Gay & Lesbian Allegiance Against Defamation, has just released a study that details the decline in LGBTQ+ representation in film released in 2o25, the third consecutive year to do so.
The largest statistic denotes that there were no LGBTQ+ characters in 19 films categorized as animated/family, and no transgender representation in the 225 films released from the 10 largest studio distributors.
The report, entitled Where We Are In Film, serves as the 14th edition of the study. The data was tracking films from the 10 largest studio distributors from January 1st – December 31st, 2025.
Of the 225 films tracked, only 46 of them, or 20.4% included outward LGBTQ characters. This marks the third consecutive drop since 2023, which marked 28.5% of films including queer representation.
GLAAD however detailed the horror genre as a “bright spot” for representation, citing entries such as I Know What You Did Last Summer, Companion, and Weapons among others as including significant characters or representation. Mid-budget films (films produced within in $15-90 million dollar bracket) were also cited as carrying a bulk of the weight in representation of LGBTQ stories.
Of the study, GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said “If the industry doesn’t prioritize investing in films with LGBTQ characters, it risks losing a generation that will go elsewhere to find entertainment that does include our community.”
