It’s been more than two decades since the last movie in the Lethal Weapon series was released, but apparently the franchise is not completely dead. This buddy cop franchise set the template for all future buddy cop movies to follow with its story of LAPD detectives Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), teaming the “by the books” family man with a suicidal loose cannon.
While rumors of a possible sequel to Lethal Weapon 4 had been circulating for over a decade, nothing official ever came out. However, according to ScreenRant, Warner Brothers just officially announced plans to make Lethal Weapon 5. The film will once again see Gibson and Glover reprise their roles as Riggs and Murtaugh respectively. Likewise, director Richard Donner, who directed and produced all the original four Lethal Weapons, will be returning to direct Lethal Weapon 5 as well. Donner is, of course, also famous for directing the original Superman movie, The Goonies, and Ladyhawke.
In addition to Donner returning to the director’s chair at 89 years old, but it’s been rumored that writer and director Shane Black, who wrote the screenplay for the original Lethal Weapon, will be in charge of writing the new film’s script. However Black’s involvement has not been officially confirmed.
