Latest Trailer for ‘The Mummy’ Explores the Villain’s Backstory

Hoping to revive Universal Pictures’ newly focused monster universe, comes a new reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise. Alex Kurtzman, shaper of previous big-spectacles as producer and writer of many in Transformers or Star Trek franchises, directs from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Passengers) and Christopher McQuarrie (Oscar winner for penning The Usual Suspects and current Cruise pointman).

The latest trailer debuted online Sunday and takes a breath to focus on the origins of the villain…an ancient princess portrayed by Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek: Beyond breakout Sofia Boutella).

The synopsis reads: “Though safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess, whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.”

The ensemble cast includes Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Emmy winner Courtney B. Vance (The People vs O.J. Simpson) and Oscar winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator).

The Mummy hits theaters on June 9th.
