Sorry those of you who would rather see a hockey masked killer chopping up teenagers with a machete than boy scouts battling legions of the undead, and congratulations to those of you who wouldn’t. There hasn’t been a new entry in the longstanding Friday the 13th film series since Marcus Nispel’s 2009 reboot – quite a step back for a franchies that used to get a new entry every one or two years. Paramount’s upcoming installment was originally slated to come out on March 13, 2015 (yes, that’s Friday), but Deadline reports it’s been pushed back to November 13 of that year (also a Friday).
Instead, a different kind of horror film will be coming out that same Friday from Paramount: the spoof, Scouts vs. Zombies. The studio hasn’t given any official reason for the push back, but it could have something to do with Disney’s live-action Cinderella adaptation, which is currently scheduled to come out March 13, 2015 as well. Maybe they didn’t want the competition – because family fairy tale movies and R-rated slasher films share pretty much the same audience, right?
Does this mean Paramount has no confidence in their (unnamed) Friday the 13th picture, and has more faith in Scouts vs. Zombies‘ ability to compete?. Or, could they simply not give damn about scouts, and want to squeeze as much money out of Friday as possible. We’ll certainly have better better ground to judge on once we actually see the films.
