‘Last Voyage Of The Demeter’ Sails Into Disappointing Opening, ‘Barbie’ Still Holds Top Spot Making $33.7 Million Domestically

Last Voyage Of The Demeter sails into theaters this weekend, but unfortunately, to a more than lackluster opening. Directed by André Øvredal, the film follows a chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula following the ill-fated voyage of the titular ship unknowingly carrying the infamous vampire.

Despite how recognizable Dracula has become over the years, Demeter is shaping up to have a rough go, opening to a mere $2.62 million, which includes $750,000 from its Thursday showings. This puts the film on track to just a $6.5 million gross for the weekend, landing it a fifth-place spot for its opening.

As Variety points out, nothing makes it clear that the summer movie season is coming to close than when a noteworthy genre film gets cut down in its opening weekend. However, one plastic doll is still impossible to cut down in its prime. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie continues to rule the box office.

Just last week, it managed to crack a billion at the box office, making it the first film solo-directed by a female artist to hit that mark. Warner Bros. hasn’t commented about the numbers just yet, though some predict that it was able to add $31.4 million to its total in its fourth weekend, with a drop of just roughly 40%.  It will end the weekend with a domestic total of $522.6 million.

Christopher Nolan’s newest picture, Oppenheimer, continues to hold its own in its box office run. It added $5.1 million on Friday, a 39% drop from last weekend, leaving it on track to make $17.2 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $262 million.

Third place is looking to be held by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, looking to earn $14.6 million this weekend for domestic total of $71.6 million. Additionally, fourth place is shaping up to be Meg 2: The Trench, with only $11.8 million this weekend, down by a whopping 60% from its last weekend’s sales of $30 million.

The top 10 for the weekend are as follows, according to Deadline:

  1. Barbie– 3 day $33.7 million
  2. Oppenheimer- 3 day $17.2 million
