Adding to its growing list of accolades, Lady Bird now has the record for best-reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes. Greta Gerwig’s indie film received a 100% fresh rating on the website, narrowly unseating previous-record holder Toy Story 2 by just two reviews.
Lady Bird is receiving some notable recognition in the world of film awards, winning both Best Picture and Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan) at the New York Film Critics Circle few days ago. Ronan also won the Gotham Independent Film Best Actress award. The National Board of Review awarded Laurie Metcalf Best Supporting Actress and Gerwig Best Director. Gerwig also won the Denver International Film Festival Rare Pearl Award.
Lady Bird is a coming-of-age story starring the highly versatile Ronan, who at the young age of 23 has already been Oscar-nominated twice (Atonement, Brooklyn) and who looks to be on track for another Oscar nod this year. Ronan’s character, Christine, trying to establish her own identity as she negotiates the transition to adulthood, insists on being called by the name Lady Bird. Christine has a fraught relationship with her mother (Metcalf), who offers closeness and approval only when Christine conforms to her mom’s idea of a good daughter, but otherwise is critical, withholding and disapproving. Timothée Chalamet does well with small role as a love interest. The young actor is having a great year, most notably with his starring performance in Call Me By Your Name for which he is cleaning up on the awards front (Gotham Independent Film Award, Hollywood Breakthrough Award, National Board of Review, New York Film Critics Circle).
