Kurt Russell, Dylan O’Brien Added to ‘Deepwater Horizon’ Cast

Veteran actor Kurt Russell (Death Proof) and rising star Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) are both in negotiations to join Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) in the docudrama Deepwater Horizon, according to Variety and Deadline respectively. The project, which will dramatize the events of the infamous April 2010 BP rig explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, is the third joint project between Wahlberg and director Peter Berg, who last collaborated on 2013’s Lone Survivor and will soon reunite for The Six Billion Dollar ManThe script is written by A Most Violent Year‘s J.C. Chandor and Matthew Michael Carnahan (Lions for Lambs).

The aforementioned event occurred over a span of 87 days– killing 11 people, extensively damaging local wildlife and spewing an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil onto the sea floor. O’Brien is in talks to portray the youngest member of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig’s crew, Caleb Holloway, who survives the devastation. O’Brien would be joining Wahlberg, who is playing the rig’s electrician Mike Williams, and Gina Rodriguez as Andrea Fleytas, a navigator on the vessel who first noticed the spill and was later detained by the coast guard. Russell’s purported role has not been disclosed.

Russell is hot on the heals of his scene-stealing role in this month’s Furious 7He also has coveted role in Quentin Tarantino’s next film, The Hateful Eight. O’Brien, most known to his fans as Stiles Stilinski on MTV’s Teen Wolf series, made his breakout film performance in last year’s The Maze Runner. He will be returning for the YA sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials later this year, and will continue his work on Teen Wolf.
