Actress/dancer Sofia Boutella has found her follow-up project to Kingsman: The Secret Service. She has landed lead role in the Star Trek 3 sequel, soon to be directed by the Fast & Furious series’ Justin Lin, according to Deadline.
Boutella’s role is undisclosed at the moment. She last played a blade-footed villain in Kingsman, giving her some experience with devious characters, though this does not guarantee her Trek role’s moral alignment. Boutella’s extensive dance background also makes her a great candidate for intricate action and fighting sequences.
After the first two recent-history Trek films, which were written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and directed by J. J. Abrams, this third installment will have a bevy of new blood at the helm. In addition to Lin’s direction, Trek actor and comedy-action Renaissance man Simon Pegg has written the script along with Doug Jung (creator of TNT’s Dark Blue). With new creative team in place, it will be interesting to see where they decide to take the series’ new characters, including Boutella’s as well as Idris Elba‘s (Thor) previously announced villain role.
Boutella will also be joining the large returning cast, which includes Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Anton Yelchin as Chekhov, John Cho as Sulu, Karl Urban as Bones, and Pegg as Scotty.
Paramount’s Star Trek 3 is slated for a July 8, 2016 release.
